En presentation som genomförs digitalt av professor Massimo Bongiorno föreståndare för Svenskt centrum för el-energilagring och balansering (SESBC)  och avdelningschef Elkraftteknik, Elektroteknik, Chalmers

The future energy system will be sustainable, and the electric power system will play a critical role in the realization of the 100% renewables-based society. Sweden and many other countries worldwide aim for an electric power system with net zero-carbon emissions. This can be achieved in different ways, depending on regional conditions. It is imperative that the electric power system should never be a limiting factor for societal progress and should be available, secure and reliable at any place, at any scale, and at any time. For this reason, it is of high importance to properly understand the needs and challenges of the future system and to develop, investigate and rank technical solutions for optimal utilization of electric energy resources, load management and energy storage. This presentation will be a journey of the evolution of the power system, the challenges that we foresee in front of us and possible solutions for continuous balancing of the future electric power systems.

Massimo Bongiorno received the M.Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Palermo,

Italy, in April 2002, and the Ph.D. Degree in Electric Power Engineering from the Chalmers University of Technology in September 2007. Since 2015, he has been holding the position of a Professor in power electronic applications for power systems, and he has been the Head of the Division of Electric Power Engineering with Chalmers University of Technology since 2020. Massimo is one of the leaders of the Area of Advance Energy at Chalmers and since 2022 he is the Director of the centre of excellence The Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre (SESBC)
